One Summer Night by Ambrose Bierce

Summary

This story is about a man called Henry Armstrong, he was very sick. He suffered from a disease that made him seem as dead.
He was buried repeatedly. One day he fell asleep but this time it would be different.

A dark summer night three men were in the cemetery digging into the Henry’s grave. Two of them were students of a medical college and the other one was a big, black man called Jess an employee from the cemetery.

They took out the coffin and Jess opened it and suddenly the sound of a thunder made Henry sat up. The three men ran away from there very scared.

The next day in the morning the two students were in medical college talking about what had happened last night while they were discussing they saw a horse attached to a light wagon near to the dissecting-room (they had already seen that horse before in the cemetery) so they went in. There the saw Jess with henry’s body on a table without head, asking for his pay.

Opinion

I liked the story because at the beginning I thought it would be the typical story about a man who was buried alive. But continuing reading, the story catches my attention and it could surprise me, it was a very unexpected end.

The story was difficult to read because it had many unknown words, but I could say I learned new vocabulary.
